On August 31, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit met in Juba with the European Union’s new Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Germany’s Annette Weber, with whom he discussed the implementation of the peace process and the most relevant regional issues.
Annette Weber, with consolidated regional experience, took over from Alexander Rondos as of July 1, 2021, launching an intense agenda of work dictated above all by the numerous emergencies caused by the conflict in Ethiopia and the political transition in Sudan.
Annette Weber’s visit to South Sudan lasted from August 28 to 31, with a busy agenda that saw the EU delegation attend the inaugural session of the Revitalized Transitional National Legislative Assembly (R-TNLA), hold meetings with President Salva Kiir, First Vice President Riek Machar, Vice President for Gender and Youth Affairs Rebecca Nyandeng, Minister of Foreign Affairs Beatrice Khamisa Wani and Defense Angelina Teny, as well as Presidential Security Advisor Tut Kew Gatluak.
The European delegation chaired by Annette Weber was also composed of the EU Head of Delegation in South Sudan Christian Bader and the advisor to the Special Representative, Irene Panozzo.
